What to Do When Dental Emergencies Strike

Dental emergencies can happen at any time and often cause significant pain and anxiety.

Knowing how to handle these situations can make all the difference until you can reach our clinic.

Here’s your guide to managing common dental emergencies at home.

⚠️ Important: These are temporary measures only. Always contact your dentist immediately for proper treatment.

Common Dental Emergencies & First Aid

1. Severe Toothache

What to do:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water
  • Gently floss around the affected tooth to remove any trapped food
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief (follow package instructions)
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 15-20 minutes
  • Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gum

When to seek immediate care:

  • Pain is severe and doesn’t respond to medication
  • Swelling of face or gums
  • Fever accompanying the pain

2. Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsed Tooth)

What to do immediately:

  • Handle the tooth by the crown (top), never the root
  • Rinse gently with water if dirty (don’t scrub or remove tissue)
  • Try to place the tooth back in its socket gently
  • If that’s not possible, store in milk or saliva
  • Get to our clinic within 30 minutes for best chance of saving the tooth

Important: Time is critical – contact us immediately!

3. Broken or Chipped Tooth

What to do:

  • Save any broken pieces if possible
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water
  • Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for 10 minutes
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of your face to reduce swelling
  • Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum temporarily

Avoid: Chewing on the affected side

4. Lost Filling or Crown

What to do:

  • Keep the crown or filling if you can find it
  • Clean the affected area gently
  • Apply clove oil to the tooth with a cotton swab for pain relief
  • Temporarily cover the area with dental cement (available at pharmacies)
  • For crowns: try to slip it back over the tooth with toothpaste as temporary cement

Don’t: Use super glue or permanent adhesives

5. Abscess or Severe Gum Swelling

What to do:

  • Rinse with warm salt water several times a day
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Avoid hot or cold foods and drinks

Seek immediate care if:

  • You have difficulty swallowing
  • Fever develops
  • Swelling spreads to your face or neck

6. Bleeding After Tooth Extraction

What to do:

  • Bite down on clean gauze for 30-45 minutes
  • Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using straws
  • Keep your head elevated when lying down
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol

Contact us if: Bleeding continues after several hours

7. Something Stuck Between Teeth

What to do:

  • Try gentle flossing first
  • Use a toothpick very carefully (don’t force it)
  • Rinse with warm water
  • Try an interdental brush if available

Never use: Sharp metal objects, pins, or excessive force

8. Jaw Injury or Possible Fracture

What to do:

  • Apply a cold compress immediately
  • Keep your jaw as still as possible
